Out of office: Currently Reading Throne of Glass, Don’t Bother Trying to Contact Me for the Next Month.

(The first four books of the series and the books I have read so far)

This will be a spoiler free review of my experience reading Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series. An eight part series that follows our female main character Celaena Sardothien. Celaena is a widely feared assassin in Adarlan, a war-stricken country under a fierce dictatorship. Initially, I was a little hesitant to start this series as it is a hefty one. Eight books! I was also still definitely in a little bit of a reading hangover after Fourth Wing. I couldn’t really imaging starting a new fantasy series but alas here we are—almost halfway through the series.

One of the things I love most about Sarah J. Maas’ writing style is that most of her books focus on a strong female protagonist. In this case, Celaena is frankly a badass warrior. She almost takes on a weird Robin Hood type role throughout the story, where, while she is an assassin for hire, she also does her best to protect the vulnerable and those she loves around her. I am almost done with the fourth book, Heir of Fire, and have already seen so much character development. She is an extremely dynamic character, and up until this point, she has truly overcome a mountain of obstacles. There have been games and trials, and loss of characters (won’t get into that one yet, but I have shed tears), and a very tumultuous love triangle.

In comparison to Maas’s other popular series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, there is a lot less spice and a lot more plot and world-building. ACOTAR is truly a romantasy book, with lots of spice, and that is a huge focus in most, if not all, of the novels. Whereas in Throne of Glass (TOG), you are thrown into the world of the characters and not pulled out by a raunchy scene every five pages (mind you, that’s not always the worst thing). The plot is the main focus, and the plights of our main character, Celaena, are where our attention stays.

Maas makes you love characters, hate characters, and everything in between. But mostly what I have found while reading these books so far is the way in which she has made me feel a part of the story in some way. In one of my previous posts, I discussed briefly how I love when a book is descriptive enough that I feel like I’m watching the book in my head like a movie, and it is very easy to visualize. That is something I feel with this series. Not only does it focus on, at this point, multiple strong female main characters, but the characters are not reliant on men, and frankly, it is quite empowering. I feel stressed, happy, and have shamelessly ugly cried a couple of times. So if you are looking for an emotional rollercoaster and have a little extra spare time to read 8 books, I would 100% recommend diving into TOG. Overall I am so excited to see where the series goes, and definitely know who I want to see killed off in the next book.

Ciao for now!
